The La Placita Luminarias are a series of sculptural cylinders with custom laser-cut patterns designed to evoke traditional luminarias. The patterns were inspired from artisenia designs seen in the work of tin artists in Mexico. The project is a public art piece and will also feature the names of barrio residents and businesses that were displaced from downtown Tucson during the urban renewal movements of the late 1960’s. The names were recovered from historical directories located at the Historical Society in Tucson. The luminarias will emit light at night and in this way, serve as a type of memorial to the culture that once thrived at the site of La Placita and the TCC. Commissioned by HSL Properties.
